New Feature: Pumpkin's Song of the Day

Hi everyone, I have decided to start a daily log where I share a song that I have come across during that day - called Pumpkin's Song of the Day (or PSotD). Most of these songs would stem from my 140Gb (and expanding) Vocaloid music folder. This way I can show more people the wonderful music by Vocaloids and gives me motivation to listen to my huge collection of songs. However, the music I share won't be limited to Vocaloids!

Today's song is:
Title: ごめんね ごめんね
Composer/Artist: きくお/Hatsune Miku
Album: 0003:a galaxy odyssey
Year: 2011
Notes: I suggest you listen to the song before reading the lyrics. This song talks about a daughter being abused by her father and some stranger "onii-san" (older brother). The lyrics hint at cannibalism.

Linux Quick Tip #3: Reloading Window Manager

Reload the Window Manager
When you change a theme, you will not immediately see the changed results. This is because the window manager is still running and thus prevents real-time change of the theme files. The reason aside, sometimes your window manager might be playing up or be completely frozen. Hence, the only solution to prevent losing your work is do a quick reload of the window manager.

To reload your window manager:
1. Press Alt + F2 to show the command dialogue
2. Type r and press Enter
3. Window manager should reload

NOTE: Some Linux distributions do not have the Alt+F2 keyboard shortcut enabled. You should check your keyboard shortcut settings and confirm if the 'Command Window' option as Alt+F2 selected.

Anime Review: Amagami SS

A romantic comedy anime based on a dating simulation game on the PS2. Does it work out in the end or does it become one cheesy act? This anime review takes the sequel, Amagami SS+ plus into account.

Amagami SSSynopsis:
Two years ago, Tachibana Junichi got his heart broken by a girl who didn't show up for a date on Christmas Eve. Now a second year student in high school, Junichi spends his days inside his closet planetarium, going to school and hanging out with his friends Tanamachi Kaoru and Umehara Masayoshi.

After a chance encounter with one of the most beautiful girls in school, the third year student Morishima Haruka, Junichi finds himself spending time with her, carrying books for her or having her unexpectedly jump on his back and act as she's a jockey and he's her horse. Soon enough, Junichi becomes romantically interested in Haruka which leads to...

Amagami SS is based on a PS2 dating game featuring six different girls. The story of the anime will be arranged in an omnibus format, with each heroine getting her own version of the story animated. Each heroine will sing her own version of the ending theme song.

Let me tell you this. I have not played a dating simulation game in my life so I cannot really compare Amagami SS to it's PS2 counterpart. Let me tell you from a perspective of a person who only watched the anime and have not played the game. As I have read from other people's reviews, the anime is split into five different arcs. Each arc features a different girl character that the main character, Junichi falls in love with. Hence, there is quite the repetition of background information, settings and time events throughout the five arcs. Although it be be trivial, but each arc have their own complications and resolutions. It may get a bit boring at times, but in the end, it's really just another romcom anime. I guess when an anime is based on a game, it tried to be exactly similar to it. This restricts how the anime can be more creative and innovative is displaying ideas and concepts that were not derived from its video game or manga counterpart. Here, Amagami SS just basically takes you through all five arcs and dumps you at the end of each one. Basically it is just like a real-time video game played on your screen. It was a good idea, but not executed brilliantly.

The art was excellent and the characters were highly detailed. Although the background sceneries were restricted to just a few places, different times and viewpoints were used. For some reason, just looking at the main characters I felt that somehow the faces all looked a bit too similar. Then I realized, there were pretty much the same shape and size with just a few minor tweaks adjusted. I felt that the illustrators were either too lazy or too underpaid to add unique features to the characters, unless, of course they were trying to imitate the PS2 version to specification.

Sound quality was fine and the voice acting was spot on. The anime had different theme songs for each story arc so there was quite a few to keep you occupied. Of course, the opening theme songs did not change and I quite enjoyed listen to the pop tunes. In the end, the ending songs I pretty much skipped since it wasn't that appealing. They did however, change each ending songs' video which was a nice touch.

Amagami SS is all about the characters and nothing else. Here we see a lonely guy Junichi that is scared in falling in love again after what happened the previously in a broken relationship. Of course, he does fall in love at the end again, but just watching the stumbles and embarrassing moments is just hilarious. Other each girl has a totally different personality and relationship with him so its nice to see the different changes of pace for each one.

Overall, I must say that if you are a NEET, otaku, dating sim fan, romcom fanatic, then this anime is suitable for you. Everyone else, stay out. I liked the concept but disliked its execution. I got bored after a while since the story was being repeated over and over again. The change of pace is a welcome addition though.

While it tried really hard to be the same as its video game, it fails at execution.

ART: 8
Nice sceneries and environments. The characters looked too similar to be a coincidence.

Good voice acting with a variety of theme songs.

Just solely focused on a bunch of girls and a guy. Pretty much that all there is to it.

Fun to watch for a while, until it gets repetitive.

Perfect for romcom fans and the like. Perhaps not really my type of anime.
