Anime Review: Strike Witches + OVA

After a brief introduction to what Strike Witches is all about in the Strike Witches OVA that only lasted 7 minutes long, Strike Witches is the true beginning of an anime series of aliens, girls, and guns- in a different sense of a military, slice of life, and action anime.

Strike WitchesSynopsis:

The year is 1944 and the world lives in fear of unidentified flying objects called Neuroi. With the old-boy old guard unable to thwart this deadly menace, humanity turns its desperate eyes to an aerial attack force with much nicer legs. Meet the girls of the 501st Joint Fighter Wing, better known as the Strike Witches. These darlings of the great blue yonder may not have standard issue uniforms, but they do have all the right stuff. Where the average flyboy falters, these dolls blast aliens to bits in the bat of an eyelash. With a little magic and a whole lot of leg, the girls of the 501st are winning the war on pants, and aliens!

Let me tell you something that this anime doesn't have that all other anime I have watched has. The lack of pants on all female characters in the anime. Did I miss something here? I can't tell if this anime is supposed to be serious or a parody of something but seriously, the lack of pants caught me off guard and kept me distracted for the first few episodes. Perhaps the lack of pants is meant to keep the viewer occupied but I have no idea why that is so. Of course though, the lack of pants does not mean lack of panties. You just see girls walking around in full uniform except pants; and they're all acting if this is the norm! Anyhow, enough talk about pants, time to get to the main point- which is the story. Discarding the ecchiness aside, this story is about a group of magical girls that uses "Striker Unit" that enables them to fly in the air as use various 20th century weapons against an unknown group of aliens called "Neuroi" that decides to invade the Earth. As you may have guessed already, it is up to these girls to stop these aliens and to save the day. And no, these are actual aliens, not tentacle monsters.

The art was really well done with some nice details on the characters and environment. The cars, trains, ships, uniforms as the base are all retro style looking- appropriate for an anime set in the 1940s. Perhaps the "Striker Units" and magical powers is a little bit more fictitious, but it all adds up to the enjoyment of the anime.

Voice acting was particularly suitable for these teenage girls. Many times I ad to look up the voice actors because they sounded so similar to other related anime such as Sky Girls. The theme songs were relatively nice providing some pop songs although it wasn't memorable. Rather boring to be honest. Anyhow, there were plenty of sound effects present throughout the anime such as the sound of guns blazing, the sound of rotating motor blades, and the explosion of Neurois. It was wonderful.

The characters are your standard range of different type girls from your quiet type to your bossy type. Obviously the main character has to be the one that is average in appearance, extremely nice, naive, but has a massive amount of power that is revealed in the end. Also, it is expected that the captain of the team is a tsundere type. Thus, we have a generic stereotypical cast of characters. Ok, it is slightly interesting but it is to be expected for this kind of anime.

Overall, although to story was rather weak, it was entertaining to watch pantless girls with aliens whilst flying the sky. The art is rather good and the battle animations were fluid. Voice acting was perfect and background music was decent enough to support the anime. In the end, if you  are into sci-fi, military, and pantless girls then this anime is suitable for you.

So it was rather weak and linear, but the some battles were rather entertaining.

ART: 8
Detailed characters and backgrounds are all there is in the anime.

Voice acting was perfect. The theme songs were rather boring.

Generic stereotypical characters that were probably based off other anime.

I found it more slice of life than action.

I found this anime to be above average overall. The girls all looked cute and all but the story was rather weak.
