Anime Review: Lovely Complex

Lovely Complex is another typical shoujo romcom anime for those anime-loving girls which just want to relax and enjoy a romantic yet amusing anime series.

Lovely ComplexSynopsis:
Risa and Otani are always being laughed at as the comedy duo. Risa, a girl, is taller than the average girl, and Otani, a boy, is shorter than the average boy. The two are always bickering and even their teacher sees them as a comedy act. But as their friendship develops, so do Risa's feelings toward Otani.

I keep asking myself 'Why do I keep watching these shoujo romcoms?'. Short answer: depends on my mood. I try not to solely focus on one genre of anime and forget about the rest. Anyhow, on to the story of Lovely Complex. As the name does not suggest, this is one typical shoujo romcom anime with a slight twist. That is the girl is taller than the boy. This probably already rings many bells. How does a girl like a guy shorter than her? Well everything is practically answered as you watch throughout the anime. However, during the journey many misunderstandings and embarrassing moments appear and it adds to the enjoyment to the anime. If I was a girl, I probably would have enjoyed the anime a lot more. As a guy, it was more of a slight smirk and a convincing nod.

The art was plain and simply illustrated. The characters did not have much detail on them so you are always left staring at a blank face. On the other hand, the backgrounds and environments were good enough to justify the overall experience of watching the anime. I would say though, perhaps the anime was more focused on the development of the characters and output of the story that they lacked the visual appeal of the characters.

Sound was perfect and voice synchronization was spot on. The opening and ending themes were not that memorable so I would have to say it was pretty average. You may notice some nice music in some scenes but those occasions are quite rare. Overall, sound was not really important here.

The lack in detail and visual presentation of the characters made them difficult to like. Otani is probably the most clueless and airheaded guy ever in all the anime I have watched. It is just hilarious and frustrating watching Risa trying to get Otani to like her. Of course, lots of complications happen and that just adds more fun to it. In the end, the characters took a while to get used to. In the end, I found them rather generic.

Overall, it was rather enjoyable to watch even though its really meant for teenage girls. There are plenty of hilarious and embarrassing moments to enjoy and the conflicts between Risa and Otani is just entertaining.

It's your typical romcom anime with plenty of conflicts and misunderstandings.

ART: 6
Rather generic and plain. Took a while to get used to.

Good voice acting and theme songs were pretty average.

Rather generic and not really memorable. Risa and Otani is probably the only characters worth reminiscing about.

I probably would have enjoyed it even more if I was a girl.

Really depends on many factors if this anime will appeal to you. If you are a girl, likes comedy, romantic relationships, and slice of life, then this will definitely work for you.
