Anime Review: Nagasarete Airantou

A quirky yet funny anime with pretty much a pointless story line about a boy who runs away from home and washes ashore on a secluded island full of girls. It may seem interesting but in the end, the dry humour and the facepalming is all that you will get.

Nagasarete AirantouSynopsis:
Ikuto Touhohin just had a fight with his old man, one that led him to make a rash decision to run away from home. He boards a ship, deciding to take a vacation, but the ship is suddenly hit by a huge storm - one that sends Ikuto overboard! When he regains consciousness, he realizes he is still alive on some island. An isolated island. An isolated island with nothing but girls. Beautiful girls. Stranded on an island with only girls, no electricity, gas, radio, television, like he was back in the stone age.

Its really uncommon for an anime to contain a pretty much pointless story about a boy stuck on an island. Well, this anime is one of the firsts that I have actually completed watching. The innocent humour is always there, and some parts were quirky whilst others were straight facepalming. That ebing said, Nagasarete Airantou offers little introduction or background information regarding any of the characters or the history of such a place. Although, one episode did explain some of the history, there are still many loopholes and unanswered questions. I think that the whole point of the anime was to enjoy the humour and have little regard for the story.

Ok, the art wasn't that particularly enticing. The characters looked a bit 'chibi' and definitely unrealistic. I guess this was deliberately done to add humour and cuteness to the anime. The background scenery was well drawn, especially the jungle areas as well as the snow-top mountains. The talking animals were hilariously portrayed and well animated.

The sound track was not memorable at all. The lack of any catchy tunes did not directly effect my viewing experience of this anime. Of course, sound selection and background music is important, however for a pretty much pointless anime there is really little need for extra care for music. Although, there were some pretty important scenes that did feature some nice music. But overall, 'don't judge the anime by its music' pretty much applies here.

There just so many characters you probably won't remember any of the names of everyone that appears in the anime. It seems appropriate though because this is an anime set on a secluded island after all. The main character obviously will stand out since he is the only guy on the island. Although, there are some memorable characters that may fancy your liking. The character's personalities and styles varied considerably throughout the anime. You will not get bored at the funny moments, embarrassing moments and utterly stupid moments.

Overall, I honestly believe that this one just one stupid anime. So stupid enough to make me watch it till the end. The constant humour and silliness just kept me watching. Although I did get annoyed at the over-the-top constant, over-exaggerated nosebleeds from the main character. You may agree with me after you have watched the anime. The anime is funny and stupid at the same time and it not worth your precious time. Although if you do find you have nothing else to do, this anime is suitable for some quick laughs.

Pretty much no story at all. The humour makes up for it though.

ART: 6
Decent art with some nice expressions. The characters looked a bit out of place at first, but you will get used to it. Lack of textures on characters is unappealing. Background scenery was well done though.

Lack of interesting sound tracks although some scenes did have some appropriate music.

Plenty of different characters. Mostly girls though with different attitudes and styles.

It was funny and some parts were interesting. Although, the story was full of holes, some side-stories were pretty interesting.

There are some good and bad points in this anime. Its funny and interesting in some bits, but the lack of cohesion between episodes and pretty much pointless storyline makes this anime a bit broken. The interesting lives of the characters make up for the missing content though.
