Anime Review: Planetes

A sci-fi space anime featuring a bunch of guys collecting space junk. Sounds boring? Hardly! It may sound that way, but how the story is presented and the interesting range of characters is what makes this anime not boring at all.

In the year 2075, mankind has reached a point where journeying between Earth, the moon and the space stations is part of daily life. However, the progression of technology in space has also resulted in the problem of the space debris, which can cause excessive and even catastrophic damage to spacecrafts and equipment. This is the story of Technora's Debris Collecting section, its EVA worker, Hachirota "Hachimaki" Hoshino, and the newcomer to the group, Ai Tanabe.

Ok, so its pretty hard to convince someone to watch an anime about people collecting garbage in space. However, this anime seems to tell a completely different story than just collecting space debris. There's plenty of romance and action seen throughout the anime. It's really hard to explain what is happening exactly in writing, but, all I can say is the story is touching in many ways.

The art was well illustrated in every form. The planets, space and satellites were precisely drawn to perfection. Even the space debris looked different from one another. Different locations were aplenty and you will never get bored of looking at space.

The voice acting was really well done by the voice actors. Even the change in environment had its own unique sound echo. Even when the characters were in their spacesuits, they actually sounded like they were in one (including the heavy breathing etc...).

The characters took a while to get used to. I say that because the story doesn't actually take off till episode 10. The episodes before that was to set the settings, introduce all the characters and give some important background information. After episode 10, not many new characters are introduced.

Overall, it may sound boring, as I did at first. I was wrong, I completely prejudged this anime. Even though I was a sci-fi fan, I never expected this anime to be excellently made.

It was a really interesting story from start to finish. I not once got bored watching too many episodes continuously. You must really watch every second of this story to enjoy this anime completely.

ART: 8
Well illustrated. Every component felt proper in its place, from the spaceships to the surface buildings.

High quality voice acting and sound effects were evident in this anime.

Interesting cast of characters throughout the anime.

I enjoyed this anime a lot. The story was really well told and the action was really great.

A high quality anime, suited for sci-fi fans specifically. It will not disappoint.
