Anime Review: The Law of Ueki

A typical shounen anime with nice action elements truly make this a unique anime in many ways. The plot twists with included special powers and a good sense of humour makes this anime worth to watch just for the action scenes.

The Law of UekiSynopsis:
Kousuke Ueki, a student of the Hinokuni Junior High School, is picked by a God Candidate, Koba-sen, to participate in a competition where people battle out to become God and only the strongest will prevail. Embodied with the ability to turn garbage into trees, Kousuke will be joining in the battle against other junior high school students in this selection. This sets the premise for the earth-friendly battle where the students will pit their powers against the rest.

It is very rare to see shounen anime contain high school students that possess special abilities which participate in a all-out competition to see who's the strongest of them all. Seriously though, it is a typical shounen anime with a rather generic storyline. Story aside, what makes this anime even that more interesting is that of the unexpected events that seem to appear randomly or the comedic style elements which make this anime a joke. In my opinion, it was more of a anime that you wouldn't take seriously whilst watching. This makes it enjoyable all the more.

The art was decent enough, but I expected a lot more for a 2006 released anime. It could be considered as lower grade than compared to the top-ranking anime, but all the more, it was bearable some way or another. There were some nice scenery scenes and the special effects were well simulated. Some battle grounds were quite interesting and well-imagined. In my opinion, the art can be considered 'above average'.

Voice acting was perfectly recorded and the vocal expressions were really felt throughout the entire series. Different characters obviously had different voice actors, not once did I get characters mixed up. The opening and closing themes were catchy and even the emotional scenes were really brought out by the melodramatic background music.

The characters were memorable enough. You may take some time to get used to all the weird, quirky characters but in the end, its really up to you to decide who you like and who you dislike. For me, I liked the main character the best. The characters all had their funny moments, and there are plenty of dramatic, emotional and over-the-top moments you will encounter in the anime.

Overall, this is a good anime to watch just for a few laughs and some nice action moments. By no means will this anime actually captivate you longer than the set 51 episodes, but it is still worthwhile to watch.

Generic storyline with some good plot twists and unexpected events. Above average would describe this story appropriately.

ART: 6
Could have been much better, but bearable to watch. You will get used to it eventually.

Voice acting was accurate to the respective character. The theme songs were catchy.

Wide range of quirky characters throughout the anime.

Some cool action scenes and some nice melodramatic events make this worth while to watch.

An unique anime that features school kids, special powers and a competition. What more can you ask more?
