Anime Review: Clannad

Clannad and Clannad: After Story is one of the very best anime to be ever produced, due to it's interesting and sad story, well-loved characters and beautiful art style. It is not a anime you want to miss.

Okazaki Tomoya is a delinquent who finds life dull and believes he'll never amount to anything. Along with his friend Sunohara, he skips school and plans to waste his high school days away.

One day while walking to school, Tomoya passes a young girl muttering quietly to herself. Without warning she exclaims "Anpan!" (a popular Japanese food) which catches Tomoya's attention. He soon discovers the girl's name is Furukawa Nagisa and that she exclaims things she likes in order to motivate herself. Nagisa claims they are now friends, but Tomoya walks away passing the encounter off as nothing.

However, Tomoya finds he is noticing Nagisa more and more around school. Eventually he concedes and befriends her. Tomoya learns Nagisa has been held back a year due to a severe illness and that her dream is to revive the school's drama club. Claiming he has nothing better to do, he decides to help her achieve this goal along with the help of four other girls.

As Tomoya spends more time with the girls, he learns more about them and their problems. As he attempts to help each girl overcome her respective obstacle, he begins to realise life isn't as dull as he once thought.

The story of Clannad is one you must completely dive into. It is not a story that you would simply skip over. Clannad focuses on near real-life events of a group of high school friends and their relationships with each other. Aside from the slice of life style genre, the anime contains some comedic elements as well as romance throughout the anime. In the end, it is one big plot twist. I can't say much here so I don't spoil the story for those who haven't watched it. But this story will manipulate your emotions a lot.

The beautiful visual art accurately conveys the feelings of the anime to the audience. The places, people and emotions can all be clearly seen in every moment of the series. It was been wonderfully illustrated and well brought out by the artists.

Voice acting was superb. Each character really stood out from one another. The personalities of the characters were well represented in every way. The theme songs were meaningful and appropriate for such a dramatic anime.

Characters were well remembered and loved. You will definitely find a connection with the main characters as you watch the two seasons. The emotions brought out by the characters are so great that they will make you cry and laugh throughout the series.

Overall, without giving away any spoilers, I must say that this is a really well made anime in terms of storyline, visual appeal and character development. You will definitely get emotional as you watch every episode in the series.

Has a really captivating story. Conveys a lot of feeling to the audience. Makes you want to watch more.

ART: 9
