GIMP 2.8 Released

For all those art-lovers and Linux image editors out there, GIMP has been updated to version 2.8 after 2 long years of development.

Final GIMP 2.8 Splash Screen

GIMP 2.8 boasts a wealth of improvements - both under the hood and above it. The GIMP Users site has an excellent summary of all that’s new in GIMP 2.8, but a few choice highlights are listed below.

Single window mode
One thing I always hated about GIMP was the its panels and toolbars being all in separate windows. With this new release, they all fuse into one. single. window. Finally they heard the community and they provided us with a more Photoshop-like experience.

On canvas text editing
This is a nice feature to have and it makes text editing much easier. I have been too accustomed to Photoshop's quick text editing on the canvas so this gave me lots of trouble before. Now it's available in this new release.

Layer Groups
Layers can now be grouped. So all you Photoshop converts- rejoice!

Download
As the release GIMP 2.8 hasn’t been officially announced you can’t get the latest release anywhere but the FTP.

The release candidate of GIMP 2.8 is, however, available to install in Ubuntu 12.04 via a dedicated PPA. The usual caveats apply when installing software from third party sources.

  • sudo add-apt-repository ppa:otto-kesselgulasch/gimp
  • sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install gimp

Linux Tycoon: Soon to be 1.0

In a blog post announcement, Bryan Lunduke has decided to release the full version of Linux Tycoon tomorrow. Linux Tycoon is the most advanced Linux Distro Simulation Video Game in the world and will be leaving Beta tomorrow.

In other words, it is going to be Linux Tycoon 1.0. That means the right now is the last chance to buy the game at the Beta price of $4. The price will be going up tomorrow to $5.

Lunduke has assured us that even though Linux Tycoon will be out of Beta and into full release, development will not stop. Additional cool ideas and features are coming our way in the near future.

So if you have not bought the game already, this is your last chance to get it for $4. This game is addictive if you have plenty of free time and is a Linux fanatic. Of course, I think it's every Linux fanboy's dream to own their own customized distro.

What's this 'zerg rush'?

Google Zerg Rush

It's definitely a bit late for Google to release April's fool jokes but this is no joke at all. It seems like we have landed into another Google search easter egg that seem to have been releases a few days ago. Typing 'zerg rush' into Google search will bring about your doom. Really.

Type the search into Google and dozens of letter “Os” will appear on your screen, obliterating your search results. Users earn points by clicking on the letters to stop them in their tracks.

The easter egg is a homage to ‘90s computer game Starcraft in which aliens known as “Zergs” would descend upon (and often destroy) the player.

Once all the letters have been immobilised, they form into two giant letter “Gs”. At least that’s what various websites are claiming happens because nobody has seen this happen first hand.

“Defeat is inevitable,” wrote Ubergizmo.

CNET concurred, claiming users were “fighting a losing battle”.

Fear not, though you may never win, at least you can rest easy in the knowledge that you can defend the interwebs once more, simply by clicking the “refresh” button.

So if you are a serious Starcraft player (Rhycen), give this a go and see how your APM racks up! How many Zerglings can you defeat?

My LUL #6

It's been a while since my last update log. Much have changed since I last posted. As noted, my uni holidays have already long gone and currently I am in Week 9 of a total 13. It is nearing the end of another semester and I'm already dreading the pile of assignments and exams that will be due soon. As for now, it's time to stop relaxing and get to work!

Of course more work will mean less time to game and watch anime. Currently I am in a anime viewing slump. It seems like I've gotten a bit bored, perhaps the lack of interesting anime out there to keep me motivated. I recently rewatched Steins;Gate and I am still loving that anime. It is probably my favourite anime of all time on par with Angel Beats!. Right now I still have a backlog of anime I have yet to watch and review. Seems like Honey and Clover is next on my list. I am not particular into shoujo romcoms but Honey and Clover seems less of a shoujo romcom and more of a slice of life comedy anime. Oh well, I'll see how it goes eventually.

Apart from my life, I have also been improving the blog a bit. You may have noticed a few new options in the top and bottom menus as well as some added features. Let me start with 'Vocaloid Show'. Basically it is a simple slideshow featuring Vocaloid pictures to keep you entertained a while longer. Right now it has around 208 pictures but we will add more later on. What else...? Ah, yes, I relaunched my Minecraft server a while back and it has been pretty successful so far. I've managed to get most of my pals back into playing it occasionally. I recently migrated the Minecraft server to my own home server so this will free me from rent fees!

In addition, I tried to host a 'Git' server on my home server but somehow it didn't work so now it's in limbo at the moment. Eventually I will try to fix it but I can't really be bothered right now. If you want to check it out look for the 'Git' tab on the blog. Trust me, its empty and broken.

So to wrap up, the blog is nearing 5000 hits. What a milestone since the blog started at the end of January this year. I'm glad that we are getting many hits each day but am slightly disappointed that the amount of blog followers have not increased. Does this still mean that people do read the blog but not follow it? Could it be bookmarked? Anyhow, the stats don't lie so I believe that we do have some regulars. Once we hit 5000 something will happen. Enough said.

Moving away from the whole blog thing, it seems like Android is getting more powerful with more cool phones being released this year. The phone being most hyped is definitely the Samsung Galaxy S3. It will be announced very soon! Other than that, it seems my relatives are all either Apple or Samsung fans. I've converted most of them to switch to Android though. Haha! The Samsung Galaxy Note seems to be a good choice right now and its pretty popular with the crowd.

So in the end it comes down to this. I'm pretty much busy with uni at the moment and probably won't be able to post as much as I do. I guess that pumpkin_so77 stopped posting a few days back. Seems like she's got a huge backlog of work to do as well. Oh well, once I finished this semester I will be free!

Until then,
MegaBubbletea signing off.

P.S. Have a nice day =)
