The Gundam series has been a long running franchise for many generations now. The stories and arcs are endless and the different styles of the continuous running series makes this a never-ending run of science fiction awesomeness.
It is the year A.D. 2307. Fossil fuels on Earth have been depleted entirely, with mankind turning to the next available power source: solar energy. During this time, 3 orbital elevators with solar power generation systems are built, each under control by the Union (formerly United States of America), the Human Reformist Alliance (Russia, China and India) and the AEU (Europe). However, not all countries are able to enjoy the benefits of this system, leading to widespread resentment and war. Arising out of the conflict, a mysterious non-profit military organization known as Celestial Being appears, dedicated to end all warfare using Mobile Suits called Gundam. This begins the stories of Gundam Meisters (pilots) Setsuna F. Seiei, Lockon Stratos, Allelujah Haptism and Tieria Erde as they are thrown into conflict between the 3 superpowers and the other various factions.
There is no doubt that Gundam has been one of the more successful long-running anime franchise for many years now. Any anime fan would have at least watched one of the many series that has been produced under the name "Gundam". It is true that this will continue to be, so does Gundam 00 live up to it's name?
Firstly, the story is no doubt very similar to the other Gundam arcs. 'A group of independent mercenaries trying to save the world from the big evil corporations' is one of the many generic storylines used throughout the series. However, each story told has many differences from one another. Looking specifically into Gundam 00, I can conclude that it has been an engaging storyline from beginning to end. What I liked most is that the story actually made sense right from the start with little confusing moments where a character will suddenly appear with no particular reason at all. The series ending was well done as well.
The art I can say was pretty impressive. I especially liked the 'particle' effects from the drives of the Gundam bots and also the scenery of planet Earth really felt realistic. Shadows and textures were well drawn and characters represented their personalities perfectly. This anime has really put the standard high for future Gundam series to outranked Gundam 00.
The soundtrack was beautifully composed and fit the theme pretty well. Also, the action scene's intense fighting sound effects and voice acting were really well done. No-one can ever forget "Setsuna F. Seiei" as well as the other character's cool names.
Speaking of names, the characters really stood out to the audience. I particularly liked the lead character and his personality. It was a really good portrayal of the characters to fit the environment around them. There are plenty of monologue scenes but this is well worth the joyride of a good sci-fi story.
Overall, I enjoyed this anime as much as any other sci-fi. I am not a hardcore Gundam fan so probably won't give top-notch marks here, but if you are, this is seriously one of the best Gundam series ever.
A good story from beginning to end. What doesn't get explained at the start will eventually get explained later on. The second season of Gundam 00 answers all the questions asked in the first season.
Beautifully illustrated with additional lighting effects and charismatic character expressions. This anime will not disappoint in the looks department.
Well produced soundtrack and voice acting really brought out the feeling throughout the anime. The sound effects for the fighting scenes were intense and well-timed.
Memorable characters from the series. You will love the main cast as well as the bots.
Suitable for sci-fi fans mostly. If you can stand sci-fi then this may not be for you. It can be a bit cliche at times, but hey, most anime is like that.
A good thrill seeking adventure joyride for Gundam fans and anime fans alike. It will not disappoint you in any way.
