Anime Review: C³

Well, what can I say about ? For one, it is simply an ecchi comedy anime with some supernatural powers mixed in. What is presents to us is a story about love, action, and comedy in the wackiest way possible.

C³Synopsis:

From the light novel series written by Minase Hazuki, comes a story of love, action, and comedy. Yachi Haruaki is a high school boy who is naturally resistant to curses. After his father sends him a mysterious black cube, Haruaki awakes to find a nude girl named Fear standing in his kitchen. She’s the human form of the cursed black cube – and an instrument of torture! Utilizing her special abilities, Fear fights alongside Haruaki to defeat other cursed instruments and their owners.

Review:

Much like other ecchi harem comedy anime, you have a guy and multitudes of different type of girls that all have different sort of feelings for the main character. However,  takes on a different direction and adds in supernatural powers and some action into the mix which does make the anime pretty interesting to watch. The story is quite simple and straightforward indeed; we have a guy which is naturally resistant to curses whilst helping these girls get rid of their curses. So you are given a twisted slice of life anime with the mentioned above themes added in. I thought the story would be simple and flowed, but I was wrong. The story was really limited and rather generic. Most ideas for a plot has probably already been used too frequently, and this just ends up predictable and not cohesive with every episode.

The art was actually quite good and well designed and of course, the characters all looked great and had some variety in style. However, a number of scenes throughout the anime were used a few times too many. For instance, the seemingly endless collection of weapons Fear uses were quite irrelevant and unexplainable to the story (although they did look quite cool indeed). It was just pretty much your standard torture devices with some sparkly elements added. I would rather have more interesting concepted weapons that multiple that look out of place.

Character voice acting was suitable for the characters and the voice actors did a great job in properly portraying their type of characters on screen. I have to say though that some sound effects did oddly feel out of place in some sequences but can be easily forgiveable given the epic battles on screen. The opening and ending theme songs felt a bit out of context to the overall anime's context and it was pretty catchy in the end.

I had some minor issues with characters in the anime. Firstly, the anime did nothing to explain to me what as exactly going on. In the end, after finishing the anime I still could not really understand what was going on and I had so many questions about the character development and the whole point of the story. Secondly, I am still confused why the anime just suddenly throw in random good/evil characters in for no apparent reason at all? Anyhow, moving on from those complaints, I rather liked the main character, Yachi. He was as what I would expect from a typical main character in an ecchi harem anime. Fear is definitely your typical naive, tsundere-type girl which you come to like after a while. And there is your typical kuudere class president and your dandere childhood friend. So you pretty much got all bases covered here.

Overall, the story was rather rubbish and not really worth looking into. It lacked much inspiration and motivation for further development and complexity which would have been a welcome addition. In the end though, it is really just about the laughs and embarrassing moments to be enjoyed. The characters were great and the comical situations were well thought out. Apart from that, everything else doesn't matter. C³ is definitely for otaku guys into ecchi harem anime.

STORY: 5
Really though, there isn't much to talk about here. The story was pretty generic and rather fragmented.

ART: 8
The characters looked great, the battles were awesome and the weapons looked sparkly.

SOUND: 7
Voice acting was really well done for the characters. Theme songs were slightly out of place but didn't matter much in the end.

CHARACTER: 7
So the characters were cute and everything, but the anime rarely explained the character's background and reasons for appearing in the anime. It felt as if they decided to thrown in a few experimental characters to see what would happen.

ENJOYMENT: 6
The story annoyed me a bit due to the lack of cohesion and proper story flow.

OVERALL: 6
I decided to give this anime a go because a friend suggested it. Sure enough, the comical scenes were funny and enjoyable to watch, but overall, the story was pretty weak.
