Anime Review: Noein: Mou Hitori no Kimi e

A mixture of slice of life, drama, and sci-gi gives us Noein: Mou Hitori no Kimi e or simply shortened to Noein. This is a story of mystery, time displacement, and friendship.

Noein: Mou Hitori no Kimi eSynopsis:

In the near future, a violent battle takes place between the dimension La'cryma (protector of humanity) and the dimension Shangri-La, bent on the annihilation of all space-time. A group known as the Dragon Calvary is dispatched through space and time, searching for the only thing that can stop the invasion: the Dragon's Torque.

In the present, twelve-year old Haruka and her friend Yuu, are contemplating running away from home when they meet a member of the Dragon Calvary named Karasu (Crow). He believes that Haruka possesses the Dragon's Torque and claims to be Yuu from fifteen years in the future...

Review

The idea of an anime that deals with different dimensions that collide with each other is quite a 'thinker' indeed. Not only do you have to guess what is happening in the current situation but you also have to think how everything related to each other. Most of the time you will be left guessing as to what happened, what is happening, and what will happen. Granted, the anime does give us some explanation as to the whole idea of alternate universes and different dimensions which makes it a little easier to grasp. Once you get this idea in your head, you then can move on to the main story at hand. The future portrays a grim battle between two dimensions and their struggles to save or destroy the future by manipulating the past using the Dragon's Torque. Not surprisingly, the main character, Haruka possesses this Dragon's Torque and incidentally encounters Karasu which is in fact her friend Yuu from the future. Confused yet? Somehow it doesn't matter so much if the present Yuu meets his future seld. Could it be possible then, that there are many different futures a person can take? The story is quite engaging, entertaining, and will keep you occupied till the end.

The art was rather well animated. The characters did look a bit odd. Although they were younger kids and had pretty round faces. It didn't bother me that much but I rather the character representations were a bit more mature. On the other hand, the character's future selves looked pretty cool indeed. Yuu of course looked the scariest; but the other characters pretty much looked like themselves. Battle animations were quite detailed and there was plenty of lighting affects.

The theme songs were rather acceptable for the anime. Sound track in general was well chosen for various scenes throughout the anime. Sad scenes had slow moving music and battle scenes had a fast paced score. The voice acting was your typical average cast. Nothing really particular stood out and character voice acting was all right.

Yuu was the center of attention throughout the anime. I'm talking about the future Yuu (Karasu) that is. Everyone seems to like him except for the present Yuu. He feels some jealousy toward his future self as Haruka is paying more attention to Karasu than him. This makes the story that more interesting. Just thinking about how you could fight your future self is quite amusing indeed. In the end, he discovers that he is quite important and strives to save the world from destruction. Haruka holds the mysterious Dragon's Torque and she has a connection to everything that is happening around her and of her future. The rest of the characters also played a major role throughout the anime as either support or story development.

Overall, it was a interesting anime to watch. Although some minor details were left out, the story made sense in the end. The anime did explain the concept of limitless pasts and futures and it did that quite logically. This anime is definitely for those who are into sci-fi and time-related materials.
